A Problematic Charlottesville Tweet

As you all are no doubt well aware, some incredible bullshit went down in Charlottesville, VA this weekend. White, privileged college students got worked up into a tizzy over an outdated, long overdue to be destroyed Confederate statue finally being taken down and their "brethren" and older counterparts quickly followed suit.

What's shocking about it is Black protesters over Ferguson were marching about the actual death of an innocent black boy that took place. These college white boys were protesting over an inanimate object being removed. That's what you're really getting upset about?? Videos have surfaced showing protesters actually pushing up against police riot lines, physical contact between bodies and riot shields is being made and held continuously and nothing happens. Absolutely nothing. The police simply let them push while they go on about their staring back at the crowd. If black protesters ever even considered making physical contact with a riot shield, not only would they be imprisoned, they would more than likely be battered to a pulp, for having the "audacity" to try such a thing.

What's horrifying about it is 3 people have died as a result.

But as infuriating as all of these things are, that's not what we are here to talk about. Where here to talk about the below tweet from the official Twitter account for the Women's March:

The tweet in question

There are a myriad of problems with this tweet, the biggest one being a mostly white organization putting the onus of correcting behavior and making change on Black women as if we don't already have enough to deal with, enough problems to fix. You're really going to call out Black women and other women of color to not only solve our community's problems but then solve yours too??

To be fair, the following tweets do go on to talk about how white women need to step their game up and get their men together.

The follow-ups

The fact that not everyone is going to see the following replies and initial tweet hands off responsibility to female POCs is unacceptable. Why would you immediately turn to women who have already had to deal with the abominable behavior of white Supremacists and Nationalists and say, "This problem with our white men is back and in rare form! Can you deal with it please? We really think you're better suited. Thanks!!"

This only perpetuates the stigma of the Black Superwoman, who take care of everything, solve every problem, and climb every mountain for the good of all mankind all while being completely selfless, never needing anything herself.

White women are who really need to step up here. It shouldn't have to be made relatable for it to matter but these are your husbands, your uncles, your fathers, your sons, your nephews, past, present or future, going out into the streets and showing the rest of the world that Naziism is rearing its head in the one country no one expected a resurgence from. This is not our burden, this is not our cross to bear, it's yours. And for those with the argument, "not all white people", well it's obviously enough of them to get national attention and 3 people murdered. What are you doing to stop those who would do people of color harm? Your work is cut out for you, not get to it. Silence on the issue is still a response.

xx

PS. This is a great thread if you haven't seen/read it already that encompasses the issue succinctly.
